Justice had never been manhandled so thoroughly, going through security at ADX Valdez. At last, a name for the mysterious building. When he’d walked in the door with the gorgeous and bloodthirsty Olivia at his side, Justice had felt like a rockstar about to go on stage.

But when they took his belt, his wallet, his keys, and his phone, then ushered him through a full body scanner and through a series of six security doors just to get to the elevator that led down into what the guards kept calling “the pit,” Justice’s confidence wavered.

Justin was here. In this building. He’d been here for years, locked underground in a small chamber with artificial light glaring. All alone.

As thoroughly private as Justice was, Justin was a proud extrovert. He was nothing without other people around him. To laugh with, to fuck, to torture, to murder. And solitary had a way of changing the heartiest souls.

Olivia stayed close as they rode the elevator for what felt like a very long time. When they reached the bottom, two of the four armed guards had to insert keys at either side of the car to get the door to open, then two more guards on the other side had to do the same before the barrier lifted so they could emerge into yet another long hallway.

The guards paused after stepping out of the elevator, and for a split second, Justice was bathed in the most profound silence. Then with steps that rang of steel, the guards walked him down the hall in a box formation. It made him feel like a criminal, which technically he was. But he reminded himself that none of the men in this prison ever got to walk these halls, locked in perpetual solitary confinement.

Would Justin even be able to talk, or would he actually be barking insane by now? There would be a certain pleasure in that. More than anything, this place served as a reminder of what Justice’s future might end up looking like if he failed to stay one step ahead—of The Pupil, of Galvez, of the whole damn world.

They passed half a dozen steel sliding doors along the way. Was there a prisoner like Justin behind each one? Justice didn’t have the presence of mind to ask. But he could sense the evil in this place. Usually, a person would give him that feeling. Senator Daulton, Chip Harding, Abraham Kane—they’d all had the black aura of evil clinging to their pores. But here, it was as if the very concrete were imbued with evil.

When the guards paused at a door that looked identical to the others, Justice’s dry throat cracked as he tried to speak.

“I want to talk to him alone.”

“You’re not talking to me, are you?” Olivia pressed her manicured nails to her chest, offended.

Justice shook his head, not taking his eyes off the guard. “And I don’t want anything we say to be recorded.”

The guard nodded. He was a shorter man, but incredibly broad.
